"The idea for this video was born when Gerardo Jeronimo Lorenzo, a Maya Mam interpreter and former patient of pediatrician Kate Kasberger, reached out to her about making information on coronavirus available in Maya Mam, an indigenous Guatemalan language. Video is particularly useful for the Maya Mam community as some have never been able to attend school so have limited Spanish or literacy skills. She enthusiastically accepted the challenge. When informed of the project Amalia Pablo Pablo, Mam interpreter at the San Antonio Neighborhood Health Center joined without hesitation. Amalia, Gerardo, and Kate spent many hours creating and revising their script over a short time in an effort to get information out to the Maya Mam and Spanish-speaking communities as quickly as possible. CB Smith-Dahl and Edgar Ayala of Together Pictures very generously donated their filmmaking services and this video was born.
Fortunately, When informed of the project, Amalia enthusiastically accepted the challenge, Amalia Pablo Pablo, is our Mam interpreter at the San Antonio Neighborhood Health Center - she joined without hesitation. Amalia, Gerardo, and I spent many hours creating and revising the script over and over in a short time in an effort to get information out to the Maya Mam and Spanish-speaking communities as quickly as possible.
